O'Connell Street

O’Connell Street is Dublin’s main street and less than three minutes’ walk from Maldron Hotel Parnell Square. Located in the heart of Dublin city, O’Connell Street is the main thoroughfare and is one of the busiest streets in the capital city. A paved median space runs along the centre of the street, this features monuments and statues including 19th-century Irish political leader Charles Stewart Parnell, early 20th-century labour leader Jim Larkin as well as the “Spire”. The Spire is the world’s tallest piece of sculpture at 121.2 metres in height and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city so it’s always used as a meeting point for locals and visitors!

The General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin is located in the middle of O’Connell Street and is a significant landmark in Irish history. It was the main stronghold of the Irish Volunteers in the 1916 Rising which will be commemorated with a range of events in 2016.

Just off O’Connell Street, Henry Street is one of two main shopping streets in Dublin and home to well-known high street fashion including Forever 21, River Island and Zara. The street also has two shopping centres; Jervis Street Shopping Centre and The Ilac Centre as well as two prominent department stores; Debenhams and Arnotts.
