The Garden of Remembrance is located just 100 meters from Maldron Hotel Parnell Square. This beautiful garden in the heart of the city was designed by Daithi Hanly and dedicated to the memory of all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish Freedom. The large sculpture by Oisin Kelly is based on the theme of the “Children of Lir”, with raised lawns around a sunken cruciform pit, with a cruciform pool at the centre. The pool is lined with mosaic tiles in a blue and green wave pattern, with broken weapons drawing on a Celtic tradition of marking the end of the battle representing them throwing the weapons into the rivers and the battles ending.
The garden is intended as a place of quiet remembrance and reflection. When you are visiting the garden it is often hard to believe that the park is in the heart of Dublin city surrounded by people but still remains so calm. It allows people to take time out of their busy days in the city and enjoy some time to reflect.
